With the rapid development of technologies to capture and transmit human, sensor and
machine-generated data, the opportunities for data scientists are growing rapidly.
Companies and public institutions are hiring data scientists to find insights, to help on
decision-making or to provide novel services.
Universities and research institutes need data
scientists to process and analyze large amounts of data in fields as diverse as biology,
medicine, astronomy, climate or environmental sciences. However, data science is an
interdisciplinary discipline that encompasses theories and methods within broad areas such
as computer science, information science, mathematics and statistics, which, until recently,
were mostly treated as independent knowledge domains.
This course is for beginners in data science who are interested in understanding the main
concepts, methods and tools behind big data analytics and its applications. The aim is to
cover the entire data science pipeline and to provide an integrated view on databases, data
mining, machine learning and data visualization. The program includes lectures and practice
problems using real-world data and case studies.

BEST Aveiro is one of the 94 local groups of the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST) and one of the most active organisations in the University of Aveiro.
The main goal of BEST is to develop students of technology, bringing closer our three stakeholders: students, universities and partners, therefore providing three main services: complementary education, educational involvement and career support.
The organisation aims to develop students and their working capacities on an international level, creating opportunities and empowering diversity.
To fulfill this purpose, the 50 members of BEST Aveiro strive to organise about 12 events per year, including an Engineering Competition, a Symposium on Technology, a Seasonal Course and much more, reaching more than 800 students.
Known as the Venice of Portugal, Aveiro is surrounded by salt-flats, beaches and lagoons and dominated by the Central Canal running through town, the Ria de Aveiro. Once a big sea port, Aveiro lies in a region of valleys cut by mountains and fertile lagoon plains.
The city of Aveiro is crossed by canals, which give it quite an individual character, and of all the boats seen in the area, the moliceiro is the most elegant, being perfectly lined, painted with bright colours and with often ingenious and humorous decorations.
For those who love sweets, Aveiro has a well known pastry called ovos moles, made from egg yolks and sugar.
Aveiro also has a rich culture and throughout the city, there are various museums, cathedrals and other monuments representing the beautiful history of the city and even Portugal.
